Landauer Defended: Reply to Norton

چکیده
Ladyman et al (2007) proposed a model of the implementation of logical operations by physical processes in order to clarify the exact statement of Landauer’s Principle, and then offered a new proof of the latter based on the construction of a thermodynamic cycle, arguing that if Landauer’s Principle were false it would be possible to harness a machine that violated it to produce a violation of the second law of thermodynamics. In a recent paper in this journal, John Norton (2011) directly challenges the consistency of that proof. In the present paper we defend the proof given by Ladyman et al against his critique. In particular, contrary to what Norton claims, we argue that the processes used in the proof cannot be used to construct a cycle that enacts erasure in a thermodynamically reversible way, and that he does not show that the processes used in the proof violate the Second Law of

Going Round in Circles: Landauer vs. Norton on the Thermodynamics of Computation
There seems to be a consensus among physicists that there is a connection between information processing and thermodynamics. In particular, Landauer’s Principle (LP) is widely assumed as part of the foundation of information theoretic/computational reasoning in diverse areas of physics including cosmology. It is also often appealed to in discussions about Maxwell’s demon and the status of the S...
متن کاملREPLY In Live Interaction , Does Familiarity Promote Attraction or Contempt ? Reply
In this reply, we address and refute each of Norton, Frost, and Ariely’s (2011) specific objections to the conclusion that, ceteris paribus, familiarity breeds liking in live interaction. In particular, we reiterate the importance of studying live interaction rather than decontextualized processes. These rebuttals notwithstanding, we concur with Norton et al.’s call for an integrative model tha...
متن کاملThe available evidence suggests the percent measure should not be used to study inequality: Reply to Norton and Ariely
In this reply, we reiterate the main point of our 2012 paper, which was that the measure of inequality used by Norton and Ariely (2011) was too difficult for it to yield meaningful results. We describe additional evidence for this conclusion, and we also challenge the conclusion that political differences in perceived and desired inequality are small.

متن کاملDEMONIC programming: a computational language for single-particle equilibrium thermodynamics, and its formal semantics
Maxwell’s Demon, ‘a being whose faculties are so sharpened that he can follow every molecule in its course’, has been the centre of much debate about its abilities to violate the second law of thermodynamics. Landauer’s hypothesis, that the Demon must erase its memory and incur a thermodynamic cost, has become the standard response to Maxwell’s dilemma, and its implications for the thermodynami...
